Watch Out!

Turning Point USA (TPUSA) is a non-profit organization founded in 2012 by Charlie Kirk, a conservative youth at just 18 years old. TPUSA is well funded by donors; in 2014, it raised $1 million to create an organization that caters to young, conservative students. One of its subsidiary projects is Professor Watchlist, which gained over 500,000 views in its first month. Its mission is to gather information in order to “expose and document college professors who discriminate against conservative students and advance leftist propaganda in the classroom.” However, contrary to its mission to protect students in the classroom, numerous professors made the list for just one or two published articles outside the classroom.

More.

  1. Completely irrelevant nit-pick: why in the world would you organize your directory alphabetically by first name?

    1. Sounds like they could benefit from some of that "critical thinking" bullshit...

  2. I don't know whether to aspire to be on the watchlist, or to stay off. Given my contingent status, the latter is probably wiser (though some well-respected colleagues are on, so I don't think it's a major issue).

I like the response of a group of Notre Dame Faculty: they wrote asking to be included, on the basis that they'd be in good company. The AAUP has taken a similar approach. Given that ever using race, gender, and/or class as a category of analysis, in one's research *or* teaching, seems to make one eligible for the list, most humanities and social science proffies can make the argument they/we belong.

    1. I would like to be on, and I'd like to link that page to my RateMyProfessor page. Let everyone know ahead of time.

  4. I've tried to add myself a few times with their "submit a tip" page but I keep filling out the whole thing and then getting some kind of "database full" error.
