  2. I liked the line about how the job of parents is to eventually work themselves out of a job. As hard as it's been, I'm partly glad that Mr. Penny and I have been living outside the US since our kids started college (they're now in their late 20s). They had to fend for themselves, ready or not, and we weren't in a position to intervene at the drop of a hat.

  3. I disagree with the idea that people began teaching-to-the-test in the early 1980s.

    And while she is literally right about the statistics, she is not doing a fair risk/benefit treatment on the stats. I live in a densely populated area and there are abductions and sex crimes on a regular basis. It doesn't matter that millions of people are NOT kidnapped and beheaded, like John Walsh's son. To the parents who DO lose a child to a predator, that 1 child is the only one that matters.

    Mostly, she has good points, but I take issue with those 2.
