Harvard report found Asian-Americans faced admissions penalty [Boston Globe]

The flava:
Asian-American applicants to Harvard University had among the strongest academic credentials, broad extracurricular interests, and impressed alumni in interviews, but consistently scored poorly by one key measure: charming admissions officers with their personality.

According to court documents filed Friday in an affirmative action lawsuit against Harvard University, Asian-Americans across the academic spectrum received lower personal ratings from the university’s admissions officers than their peers.

Those findings are the latest evidence in a lawsuit contending that Harvard discriminates against Asian-American applicants and was aware for several years that the admissions process at one of the world’s most exclusive universities was stacked against them.

Perhaps this is a Sunday Thirsty? [from Southern Bubba, Ph.D.]

Perhaps this is a Sunday Thirsty?

I'm drunk.  So exhilaratingly drunk.

I'm wondering whether other proffies are as disillusioned as I am.

The schools all look the same, Zooze.  Are one school's graduates better off than another's?  Are not all administrators similarly disingenuous or self-deceived?

My students lately have been so kind to me.  Is it because I've been kind to them?

My mother, my dear mother, this morning at 3:00 a.m. said to me as I was changing her diaper, "I don't have to wear this shirt tomorrow, do I?"  It seemed like a spontaneous emission.  She is so sweet--and mired in the Alzheimer's.  I don't know whether she was talking about the actual shirt or about something else.  I told her she didn't have to do anything she didn't want to do.  I kissed her on her forehead.

I guess I say something similar to my students.  They don't have to do anything they don't want to do.  But if they don't pass muster, then they won't pass my class.  Period.  Full stop.

I keep reading your stuff.  It sustains me.

There is so much I do not know.  I am confused, but I persevere.

Thank you.

Summer Session/Summer School [from Wombat of the Copier]

I did a good 10 years of summer session in the state system here. It's exhausting and when implemented in 5 week rather than 8 week sessions, at least for general chemistry, it's a stupid waste of time. But I always had fun and the kids usually felt exhilarated when it was over. It's usually 85-90% type As who can't chillax for 14 weeks, and a handful of flunkies who needed a do-over.

I never realized how important the type As are for controlling flunkie-to-flunkie interactions.

I have 29 right now.  23 of them are flunkies.

Here's footage from the first day:

Idk wtf to do. If you don't hear from me again by 4th of July, ask Ben and Frod to watch Summer School, Animal House and all of the Nancy episodes of Little House on the Prairie and try to come up with an algorithm to determine their most probable prank scheme, and use Ben's knowledge of materials available in a freshman chem lab to try to develop the antidote.
