That's ok, but why is that the point you choose to sell? [from Wombat of the Copier]

What they say: No GRE required!
What they mean: We want your money.

I get that the GRE is not important to a lot of elite grad programs. I do. I really do. Standardized testing is very flawed and the better the program, the more adept we can expect them to be at discerning viable candidates from poor candidates without the use of a crutch.

But if that's your selling point, you're going after people who themselves don't think they can cut it. You don't care if they quit. You'll gladly take their money until they do.

  1. This is my joint's new shtick - devalue an existing program by using its cachet to sign up a bunch of unlikely to succeed candidates...my department's turn this year.

I wonder how much a qualification from Batshit U will be worth a couple of years from now...

  2. We'll send you an art test in the mail. Just complete it, send it back, and we'll tell you if you have the talent for a career as an illustrator or fine artist. The winner of the contest will receive a full scholarship. (Actually, a little Googling shows Charles Schulz did the course at Art Instruction Schools, and it worked out well for him.)
