  1. I wonder whether anyone is looking at "innovations" in other things besides technology—important as that is. Who's innovating in, say, foreign-language instruction? Composition courses for students who can barely write a sentence? Disability services? Tuition reductions? Financial-aid practices? Less reliance on slave-wage adjuncts? Career placements? Patents aren't the only thing that make a university great.

  2. Damn! 101st AGAIN!!

PP's list above would make for an excellent conference. Or maybe "The Journal of things that admin don’t care about but are actually important" is a title still available.

  3. EC1, I bet a lot of us here could contribute great articles to that journal! Alternate title: "The Journal of Things that Actually Promote Education and Student Welfare." Patents and experimental breakthroughs are terrific, but they have no impact at all on the typical student.

  4. Shall we get going on the conference and the journal, then? Or maybe we should start with the conference, and then publish the papers as a volume of conference proceedings. And then distribute the book to every damn college and university in the country.

  5. Ranking universities is kind of like ranking children.
