Provo, still, you know?

Brigham Young has banned most types of facial hair for decades. One emeritus professor at the university is leading the charge to change that.

  1. Back in the miserable years when my husband was applying for every academic job that came open, in anything remotely related to his field, he specifically did *not* apply to openings at BYU. He would have been expected to give up caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco—all of which he indulged in modestly at the time—as well as his facial hair and ponytail, which are more or less his trademarks. I'm glad to see that someone already associated with the university is respectfully requesting a reconsideration of the beard issue.

(To be clear, he and I take our own religion seriously and are quite prepared to respect the religions of others, but we don't think that respecting them requires us to live by them. We now live in a Muslim-majority country that offers lip-service acknowledgment of other religions, but no one actively holds our non-Islamic religion against us or expects us to adopt the religious customs of the majority.)
