new year's big hungry

How has the winner-take-all economy affected your job, your school, your students, your life, your expectations?

  1. There are many ways to look at it: materially, relative to peers, emotionally, in terms of family-wellbeing (which, at least for me, currently overlaps significantly with the emotional and material aspects).

Materially, I have done fine under this system. BU embraces it fully, which does not suit every student. The word education in “never care more about their education than they do”, could be updated to “future employment” at BU.

I strongly suspect that staying at BU improves my kids’ chances of navigating the world as it is now, any other gig would come with more time away from them, and less money, too.

There are probably places that better match my disposition, but until the kids are through uni, I’ll likely be staying put. On one hand, there’s a trade-off here, but it can also be seen as better the devil you know, or a case of the grass always being greener.

Some peers have more prestigious positions than mine, although none of them live in their first choice of city.
