Reader's Comment on NYTimes Guest Essay

Carol Baker, PhD

I feel dispirited as a professor in an era in which some students increasingly rely on AI.  While I cannot detect its use in all papers, i try. I teach in an online program.

I can detect AI use in students' records. Where students had previously signed up for two courses per semester,  to balance their academic lives with their work and family responsibilities,  they are now signing up for 4 or even 6. I contacted one student whose weekly participation was poor. She told me she was taking 5 courses at my institution and another four at a community college! In one semester.

With AI, students can earn a college degree without learning.

Rules of the Pasture

Please be kind.

Respect libel laws.

Respect intellectual-property laws.

Respect all laws.

Be true to your one pseudonym.

Vent your spleen.

And perhaps occasionally propose an ingenious way to improve the academy, if you wish.
